Sports Toursim

"Tourism and sports are interrelated and complementary. Sports – as a professional, amateur or leisure activity – involves a considerable amount of traveling to play and compete in different destinations and countries. Major sporting events, such as the Olympic Games, football and rugby championships have become powerful tourism attractions in themselves – making a very positive contribution to the tourism image of the host destination" - UNWTO

With his sporting background Chief Koti has managed to link his skill set, passion and knowledge to find common ground between Tourism and Sports. From a MICE torusim perspective, there is a need to find space for Africans and showcase talent in similar fashion to Zimbabwean champions such as Kirsty Coventry and Peter Ndlovu. From a Pan African perspective, nations need to revive progress made from events such as the World Cup that was held in South Africa in 2010. Chief Koti's outlook is the deliberate marketing of Africa as Sports Destination as a result of such investments. This event led to a great deal of investment in infrastructure, business growth from a hospitality perspective and increase in employment. South Africa and its surrounding countries also benefited from an increase in tourists who were attending the World Cup.

The synergies between the Sports and Tourism Ministries need to be better understood. This includes:

  • Harnessing relationships with other countries to host formidable events.

  • Encouraging athletes from across the world to participate in local events, such as Victoria Falls Marathon.

  • Involving more players required to realise opportunity to drive Athlete return trips.

  • Working on the messaging shared to the world about events hosted in Africa

Knowledge from Tourism day to day will help bridge the gap. Promotion of Tourism through Sports will not only bring Athletes from across the world, it will also lead to second flow of tourist visits from their supporters and sponsors.

African Tourism

Tourism spans across a wide spectrum of sub sectors such as Wildlife, Hospitality, Recreation and Climate Change. In order for Tourism to thrive, industry players must come up with vibrant sustainable solutions to conserve what we have, that is our Wildlife, Flora and Fourna. Stakeholders need to make the industry sustainable from a human capital perspective, where we all seek to empower lower tier resources and advocate for their development and growth in to positions of leadership and authority. Chief Koti hopes to see a fully fledged, and well balanced industry that is holistically inclusive.

Domestic Tourism

As the Head of Corporate Affairs at the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Chief Koti believes that his team and stakeholders have a responsibility as both an Authority in Zimbabwe and an entity in Africa under the UNWTO banner to uplift communities.

Strategic benefits for tomorrow, in the now.
